Lemongrass

Cymbopogon ciatrus

Lemongrass, a tall, coarse grass with a strong lemon taste, is commonly used in the cuisines of the Middle East , Africa and Southeast Asia. Cymbopogon citratus, otherwise known as West Indian lemongrass, is native to South India and Sri Lanka and is now widely cultivated in the tropical areas of America and Asia.

Its oil is used as a culinary flavoring, a scent and medicine. It is also applied externally as a poultice or as diluted essential oil to ease pain and joint stiffness. Lemongrass is also used as an herbal medicine to treat bacterial and fungal infections, nervous conditions, and inflammation (pain and stiffness).

Mandarin

Citrus madurensis

Mandarin has been used for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is considered a valuable medicinal herb. The oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit by cold pressing. Mandarin Oil is highly recommended for use in Massage and Bath Oil blends because of its relaxing and gently calming effects and is also very good for children’s massage.

Mandarin Oil is part of the suite of essential oils used in body toning lotions and creams to firm, cleanse and refine sluggish and dull skin and for fluid retention. It is beneficial to use in a cream, lotion or oil base, from the fourth month of pregnancy onwards to prevent stretch marks and to tone the skin.

Jasmine

Jasminum grandiflorum

Jasmine is a woody, perennial climber, which reaches up to 15 meters in height. The stems and leaves are green and the plant bears pinnate leaves and sweet-smelling flowers that are borne in clusters in summer, followed by black berries.

Jasmine is an astringent, anti bacterial, anti viral, cooling and bitter herb. It stimulates the uterus, calms nerves and is reportedly an aphrodisiac for women. On the skin it is used with great effect to treat dry, stressed and sensitive skins and also helps to increase elasticity. You can treat heat stroke, anxiety, and headaches with a jasmine flower compress.

Wild Mint

Mentha arvensis L.

The Wild mint is a 20-80 cm tall plant. Wild mint is often used as a domestic herbal remedy, being valued especially for its antiseptic properties and its beneficial effect on the digestion. Like other members of the genus, it should not used by pregnant women because large doses can cause an abortion. The whole plant is anaesthetic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, aromatic, and has agents that counteract inflammation, that relieve and remove gas from the digestive system, induce sweating, promote or assist the flow of menstrual fluid, promote secretion of milk, relieve fever and thirst, give strength and tone to the stomach, and is a stimulant.

A poultice of crushed leaves can be applied to swellings, to the gums for toothaches, to areas of pain and swellings, for rheumatism and arthritis, and for eye trouble.

Rose

Rosa

The rose has always been valued for its beauty and fragrance. Origin from China and now cultivated from America to Africa and from Eastern Europe to the Far East and is available in every colour except blue and true black.

The dried petals of the rose varieties, Rosa gallica and R. x centifolia, which are rich in astringent tannins, are used in mouth rinses to treat mild inflammations. Rose hips of some species, especially the Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa), are a rich source of vitamin C. Roses are used in face toners and perfume and are one of the most effective anti-ageing ingredients. The skin becomes supple, improves color, tone, and elasticity.

The Rose is also effective in cleansing toxins and heat from the body, particularly when they give rise to rashes on the skin and inflammatory (swelling and irritation) problems. Several researched have shown that the rose also possesses properties that increases the body’s immunity and helps to restrict all kinds of infections from becoming larger problems. This is possible owing to the rose’s cleansing or purification properties.

Lavender

Lavandula officinalis

Lavender is found worldwide, where it remains a mainstary in aromatherapy, flower remedies, and herbal medicine. A sturdy flowering perennial with a distinct woody scent, lavender is a welcome addition to any autoimmune disease healing protocol. Although the plant, flowers and seeds all have the distinct lavender scent, the oil derived from the flowers is the most important medical component.

Lavender oil contains several distinct chemicals with healing properties that complement one another. Consequently, lavender oil has a broad range of healing properties including antiseptic properties, which also make it an excellent general cleaning agent when diluted in warm water. Lavender is one of the few essential oils that can also be applied directly to the skin undiluted.

As massage oil, lavender relaxes muscles and eases tension. Lavender oil contains the natural alcohol linalool; ketones; esters; and aldehydes. Linalol provides lavender's antiseptic properties by effectively killing bacteria and viruses. Linalol also helps healing skin irritations including burns, wounds, acne and sores. The aldehydes in lavender are responsible for its distinct aroma and soothing properties. The ketones in lavender effectively reduce pain and inflammation and help induce sleep. The esters in lavender reduce soreness and swelling, prevent muscle spasms, fight fungal infections and prevent scarring. The esters in lavender also help relieve tension, depression and hysteria, and they help regulate moods.
